The SCARIEST costume of all

I worked and worked on the verifiable voting issue in 2004 but it was an uphill battle to make sure our votes were counted as cast. People thought we were nuts, conspiracy theorists. Our coalition of concerned citizens made no headway, and I got burned out. Now here it is 2006, and we’re facing the same serious questions about our voting systems. Leave it to the the funny pages to highlight this serious threat to our democracy.

  1. Ugh. I remember thinking “no, no!” when they were first saying we should switch from punch cards to touchscreens here in Ohio. Because as anyone who spends any time on a computer knows–they aren’t exactly solid and reliable.

    • I’m voting absentee here in CO and hand-delivering the ballot on election day. Not a perfect solution, by any means, but at least I’m sure my votes were cast correctly. Now if only I could be sure they are counted correctly……..

  2. This is scarier than any Halloween story or costume, isn’t it? And yet, very few people seem aware/seem to care.
Where are the voices of outrage? Where are the pitchforks and torches? What will it take to wake up the electorate? I’m wondering…and waiting…

    • Yep, I’m waiting for the pitchforks and torches, too. And this morning I read an article about the feds investigating Sequoia Systems (a voting machine company) for possible links to Hugo Chavez because they worry he’s influenced election outcomes. (Pay no attention to trouble at home, look over there in Venuzuela to the evil leftist…) I don’t know whether to laugh or cry.

    • You know, sometimes that seems true. Sigh. I was impressed that this issue was raised in “Fox Trot” (one of my elder’s favorite strips) because it doesn’t usually focus on current events.
