Yesterday was Zebu’s 11th birthday.
He spent the day at Water World with his friend and Zippy Ramone.
(The way I saw it, if I could handle 26 hours of labor Zippy could handle six hours of heat, wet shorts, crowds, lines, and sunburn).
Zebu’s friend gave him a birthday gift.
A ticket to join friend and friend’s father here
for a Bob Dylan concert.
I’m the Dylan fanatic in the household
and I didn’t get to see him in concert until I was 15.
Zebu probably couldn’t name three Dylan songs.
But he’s very excited
and I’m happy for him.
A Red Rocks concert is something he’ll never forget.
When the Dylan tickets went on sale, Zippy and I debated buying two.
However, I’m feeling a bit disconnected from old Bob these days
in large part due to this.
We passed.
But we suddenly had a craving to see a show at Red Rocks Amphitheatre.
It’s an incredible setting.
Magical.
We really wanted and needed one concert experience there this season.
We checked the roster
and bought tickets for Michael Franti and Spearhead
(and Mavis Staples!!)
I’m probably done seeing Bob Dylan in concert.
I have a slew of memories from all those concerts.
I’ll never see him at Red Rocks
but that’s okay.
It was time for something/someone new.
Zebu can’t wait for his concert
and neither can I.
He-he — I HATE Waterworld! (for the reasons you listed…of course, you could add wedgies to that list ;).
I’ve been to two concerts at Red Rocks — John Denver (when I was about Zebu’s age, in fact — I still remember many aspects of that concert) and the Allman Brothers with DH. I’d love to go again too…too bad DJ is gone now.
Have a wonderful time — when is it, btw? (I could look on their concert list, of course).

Zippy and I go on June 30th, when both Zebu and Wildebeest are at camp. It’s perfect timing!
Zebu sees Dylan on July 19 (we’re working our vacation plans around that).
Glad you have fond memories, too. I’ve been listening to EAT A PEACH a lot lately, and would’ve loved seeing Allman Bros there. Wow. We were at a Sept Neil Young concert that turned into a huge rain/wind storm; it was one of the most exhilarating experiences of my life.

It was pretty windy during the JD concert too…the beauty is astounding!

Red Rocks Amphitheatre looks awesome.
I’m a Dylan fan, mostly of his classic earlier stuff. I saw him in concert in 1985 and found it surprisingly disappointing. He semed to be going through the motions. Maybe he was having an off night. Even if he doesn’t perform as well as he used to, he’s still a fabulous poet and I’m nostalgic for who he used to be.
Despite all that and the commmercial “sellout” thing I’d still want to see him at Red Rocks. Being a Dylan fan, I’ve read several biographies, and a recent one said that he needs the money from touring (and presumably commercials). By the way, I thought his “Chronicles” was horribly edited.
Robin, John Denver in that setting would have been so cool!

I saw him a couple times in the mid-eighties, once with the Grateful Dead. They were good shows. Sorry he had an off night when you saw him.
I read CHRONICLES, too. I enjoyed it (don’t remember editing issues which is unusual because that stuff usually drives me mad) but thought it a bit funny about the need for money. How much money does a person need to live? I know he wants to provide for his family but again, how much money does a person need to live?
He is a fabulous poet (although he insists he’s not a poet).

I’ve listened to Dylan so much he’s in my blood, I think. I’ve seen him three times in concert, but only one of those was worth it. I’m about to go out right now, so I’ll prob pop him into the CD player on the way. Blood on the Tracks: my favorite! Second: Blonde on Blonde.
I’m liking Bright Eyes lately. Oberst reminds me of Dylan. And I thought that before I read it, LOL.
Have fun at your concert! Sounds like an awesome place!

Oddly enough, I love listening to Highway 61 when I’m running on the treadmill. I also love New Morning, Hard Rain, Love and Theft, Desire, and those you mentioned, plus Planet Waves, and more. 🙂
I’ve been meaning to get some Bright Eyes ever since reading about him in a magazine while my car was getting worked on.

Did I know you were a Dylan fan and just forget? My brother is the fanatic (flying to various cities to watch gigs) but I’ve caught him in concert three or four times myself. The last was about five years ago and he was fantastic. I’m not too keen on the Victoria Secret’s ad either though. Anyway, have fun at Red Rocks!

I don’t think we’ve discussed Dylan, just Billy Bragg. That’s cool your brother jets around to catch shows. I always saw him where I lived.
Was he touring on Love and Theft when you saw him? I saw that tour, too, and had a great time.
Did you read the link to the Slate article about the ad? It’s pretty damned funny. I like to think maybe it is a delayed joke re: women’s undergarments.

You know, I vaguely remember reading that Slate article back when the commercial first appeared. Kinda bizarre, like the article ponders, who would this ad actually be influencing to buy their underwear? Could just be a joke for Bob but I think it’s probably an exposure thing too. I heard Chantal Kreviazuk talking about that factor in her doing the Garnier Nutrisse ad. Record industry isn’t what it was yada yada…have to keep yourself in the public eye yada yada.
I don’t know if I ever told you I wrote BB a letter in the early 90’s and got a three page reply back. At the time I thought he was in danger of selling out (and now I think maybe he’s one of the few people who would never even consider doing that) and one of the things he said in his response was to save my anger for when he did The Gap ad. Ah, I so love Billy.
Anyway, happy belated birthday to Zebu! I’m cringing at the thought of that 26 hour labour but I’m sure he was worth it.

That’s such a cool Billy Bragg story. I’m not too surprised to learn he replied with a three page letter because he’s one of a kind, but still, wow. Actually, that’s part of my issue with BD: about 20 plus years ago a friend was teasing me about my fanaticism and I said something to the effect if BD ever sold out with a commercial, I’d destroy all my Dylan albums in the street. Friend said he wanted to be there with video camera to record my performance art. And here I am, still in possession of my catalog but thinking I’m done paying money to see him live. (Even though I keep getting twinges of regret about not seeing him in such a grand setting).
I passed along your birthday wishes to Zebu and he thanked you. (As for the labor pains, the memory fades so that women are willing to repeat the experience, allowing the species to survive. Such a deal!).
