Quiet

Yesterday Zippy and I drove Zebu and Wildebeest up into the mountains to the camp they’ll be at for ten days.

I expected to feel lighter, unburdened.  Excited.

And I guess I do.  But I’m also a little lonesome and anxious without the constant soundtrack of their laughter and bickering.

Motherhood is full of so many surprises.

  1. Ten days is a long time — I think I’d limit my kids’ camping to five days or less, for my own sanity. But wouldn’t it be great if you had a writing epiphany while they were gone, with the silence and all? 🙂 You never know…also, throw in some romantic evenings with Zippy while you’re at it!

    • Yep, it’s a long time but Zebu was the only who really wanted to go. He’s never done overnight camp but I think this will be so good for him. Wildebeest wants to do Outward Bound so this is a test run for that possibly happening next summer.
I sure hope you’re right about the epiphany. Today has not been so good on the writing front. The proverbial teeth-pulling.
Romance is definitely on the agenda…

  3. My sons left for VBS this morning, and my house is eerily quiet too. :/ It really is a weird feeling without them around, even if only for a few hours this week. So I can’t imagine ten days! I’d be playing the radio a lot.

  5. Sleep-away camp? I bet you have mixed emotions–why is loving little buggers so complicated? I was so excited to have the whole day Saturday at home to finish revisions for my agent and then after a few hours I was finished and bored and wanted hub and son to come back home. Sigh. Just enjoy your time and hope they write youfunny letters about all-things-camp!!

    • Mixed emotions for sure. But if I can get in the writing groove, this will be wonderful.
I wrote them each a letter and will do so throughout the week. They have stamps and stuff for writing home but I almost hope they don’t because I’m hoping they have too much fun to take the time to do that. Not that I wouldn’t cherish a letter from camp…

  11. I think it takes about seven days to de-kid yourself and feel like a person other than a Mom. Then you get a few days where you don’t know what to do with yourself (because well, you are a great mom, and great moms are busy), and then there’s one day that’s the perfect blend of everything, and the next? They come home.
