I’m sorry to say this doesn’t surprise me. It seems like todays editors, agents, and the like aren’t necessarily the most well read people. Instead they are very narrowly focused on the “market” and their particular niche. And if all that it took to get published was good writing then this would be a very different ball game.
P.S. Sorry to read (somewhere??) you’re not doing Rutgers this year. No Vinca in New Jersey this year. Sob!
I just found this disheartening in the midst of the Harry Potter blitz. Ah well.
Nope on Rutgers this year. It would be nice to see you again (although I’d prefer much more energy than I had last time). Did you apply this year? If so, I’ll send good thoughts for you.
Yes, I did apply but I’m actually hoping I don’t get in. I found a workshop the following week that is a lot smaller with an agent I’m interested in meeting. I think, overall, that would be a lot better for me. So I’m hoping to use the money that would have gone to Rutgers for that instead. And I don’t have to worry about missing out on meeting you.
Sending bad thoughts for you?! Nah, I’ll keep sending the good ones (because who wouldn’t that boost of being accepted again?), you can politely decline, and then attend the workshop custom-made for you.
I like that scenario!

I wonder though if they *did* recognize the pages but formed him because they didn’t want to get into it– as CL said they did.
If not, it’s actually heartening to me, not the other way around.
I agree, that would be very good. I was just thinking the article was a tough read with all the Harry Potter hoopla these days. Kind of a one-two punch for those of us trying to get into the game.

I think in all likelihood most of the agents and publishers rejecting it barely looked at the manuscripts. I have a hard time believing people in the business wouldn’t recognize Pride and Prejudice. Loved the reply from the Jonathon Cape guy though!

That is wild. Even more reason for getting your ms past the first readers through conference tickets, etc.
Thanks, for the friend!
