This short video clip is very enlightening. Lou Dobbs is pontificating on how our society doesn’t have a problem talking about race but does fear recrimination and distortion of expressed viewpoints. Lou, the wealthy white man that he is, insists the U.S. is the most progressive and racially diverse country in the world and then mid-rant about Condoleeza Rice and her remark that “race is a birth defect on America,” catches himself using the expression “cotton-picking.”
Now, I’ve heard that expression before. In fact, my mother used it when I was growing up (“Keep your cotton-picking hands off those cookies”) but I never thought of it in racial terms. And I don’t think my mom did, either.
But Lou Dobbs obviously correlates “cotton-picking” with black people. All I can say is that it’s a pretty amazing sight when his brain catches up with his mouth and he realizes he’s just blown an enormous hole in his fatuous argument.
Now can we please put to rest the delusion that this man would make a good president?!
(Note: I just realized the original video I posted contained inserted commentary so I’ve replaced it with the video clip of the television segment only.)
I loathe the fact that so many men like Lou are given a public platform. Certainly, I appreciate the right (and responsibility!) of free speech, but we have to draw the line somewhere. Sadly, few notice and/or mention it when they cross the boundaries of civility and accuracy. Blergh.

It’s all about the status quo. He has that platform because the execs know he’s going to spew that crap and it’s all good by them and their advertisers. Enough to make you pull out your hair.
And there are people who wish he’d run for president. Truly frightening.

I am so entertained when I see those dumb-heads shove both of the feet down their throats.

Lots of stuff originated in race, including cotton-picking and eeny meeny miny moe. And not everyone has forgotten it (on either side of the divide).

I felt so bad when I realized the origin of “cotton-picking” because it made me think about the pain others feel when hearing it. Pain I never even considered. Makes me wonder what other phrases I’ve used or heard that also have such connotations.

I went to that link and read some of the comments. There seem to be many people, like myself, who never thought about what that phrase means. Kinda scary how that stuff is embedded in our language.
