A while back I wrote about Wildebeest’s quest for dread locks.
He hit a, shall we say, snag along the way.
The dreads were put on hold.
This past Friday Wildebeest’s friends were here.
While skating on the patio, Wildebeest caught sight of his shaggy reflection in the window
and decided he wanted to see his neck again. (His words.)
He ran upstairs and informed Zebu, D, and J he wanted to cut his hair.
Mania ensued.
The whole process lasted about twelve minutes since Wildebeest had to leave for an
appointment. D and J did a pretty good job under those conditions but there was definitely
room for improvement. The next morning, with D’s guidance, I tided up Wildebeest’s hair
as best I could. Later, he took this self-portrait.
This morning I asked if he still liked his hair.
Wildebeest said, “My long hair looked nice when it was combed out and smooth.
But now it’s nice all the time.”
He’s happy.
I’m happy.

Yes, HOORAY! It wasn’t quite ten inches I don’t think, plus the hair was pretty damaged on the ends from all that yanking and pulling and de-snarling over the past several months. I saved it for him with a dated, written description of the events.

Wow! That was quite a shearing! Very brave, I think. Tornado Boy got his shrub pruned yesterday. He was unhappy, as he always is after a haircut. He said it made his face look fat.

The reason it was done so quickly was he wanted it done before he lost his nerve, which is why I encouraged him to hold off to make sure he really wanted to cut it. But he forged ahead and seems happy. I’m sorry Tornado Boy isn’t happy with his cut, though. Maybe he’ll like it in another couple days after he’s used to it.

He looks amazingtastic as my 15 year old would say (who also just recently cut off some lonnnng hair, very very short. And now he says he wants to go even shorter, shave it.

My guys, as teens (and as even as adults now), sway between long, wavy blond-streaked surfer locks to crew cuts. Right now one looks like Owen Wilson and the other one, Luke.
I love how they can do this without ever looking back. Girls tend to scream for days over haircuts they weren’t totally prepared for.

I like that easy transition between long and short, and back again. When I was in 8th grade I got my very long hair cut very, very short. It was a fine idea but it didn’t work out too well (the JC Penny hair salon is probably best for the over 60 crowd. Ahem).
