I stink at making up titles.
But with FRAMED, I thought I’d finally done it:
created the perfect title
right from the start!
It’s been FRAMED through
every single draft
and revision.
I was so proud of my multi-layered title.
But now it’s been pointed out that
FRAMED is too subtle for a middle-grade novel.
Sadly, I believe that’s true.
So now I need something else,
perhaps FRAMED plus subtitle.
Or maybe something completely different.
Have I mentioned I stink at titles?
All you need to do is to put another word with the FRAMED.
Of course that is my only tidbit for you. Sorry 😦 I can’t think of the magic word.
But you are going to! :))

Thanks for the vote of confidence, Meg. (And, if you happen to think of the magic word, please let me know!)

Yeah, I tend to struggle, as well. Maybe you should have a contest — it gave me some ideas 😉

That’s a brilliant idea! Even if none of the entries strike your fancy, it’s fun to see what people come up with. PLUS, they might serve as springboards for your own creative genius.

You’re right, Melodye. It’s a brilliant idea but beyond my reach right now. Ahem.

A contest? Hmm, that’s probably a good idea. But that would entail figuring out contest details and that overwhelms me, too. 🙂 Yikes.

Not sure I agree about it being too subtle. Whatcha’ have in mind for subtitle possibilities? Can you do something with the b-day angle?

It was pointed out the most successful MGs tend to have self-explanatory titles that let a kid know what or who the story is about. I have tons of possibilities and the one I liked best is FRAMED: The Whole Truth and a Few Fabrications
but even that isn’t specific enough. Close but no cigar.
I’m trying the birthday angle, too.

Oh dear. I love doing titles myself, though Plant Kid is still without one. If you want to brainstorm, email me. susantaylorbrown AT gmail DOT com

You love titles? That’s excellent. I’m definitely going to take you up on your offer later today when I have the time to write out a little blurb so you know what I’m dealing with. Thank you, Susan!!!

Awesome. I’m about to take off for the afternoon. Will look forward to brainstorming when I get home tonight.

Too subtle for middle grade? Really?
Is this for submissions or because an editor wants it changed? If the former, I’d send it as-is. If the latter, well . . . best of luck!

I think it’s true. As I mentioned to Laurie, it was also pointed out the higher selling MGs have longer, more detailed titles that let a kid know what the book is about (Diary of a Wimpy Kid; The Lemonade War; The Kid Who Became President). The suggestion came from my agent and as much as I’d rather she was wrong in this case, I think she’s right.
Thanks for the luck! I’ll take all I can get!

And yet . . . I was thinking about Cindy Lord talking about how they wanted her to rename RULES for all the reasons mentioned. And it has sold a heck of a lot of copies.

I didn’t know this. At what stage was she asked to rename RULES, do you know? Because I know it sold a heck of a lot of copies!!

I don’t recall, precisely – I think it was after acquisitions? I’m not certain she had her agent before she actually sold the ms. The publisher said that single-word titles tend to be a YA thing, among other rationales for wanting to change it. As it is, it has a different title in some of the other languages/countries in which it’s now selling.

That’s what I was thinking, too, that single-word titles are more YA than MG. Thanks for your insights, Kelly.

I’m sorry, it sounds good to me. It’s frustrating when you work at something like that and it still ends up not working. Good luck with a new title.
