This afternoon we noticed a stray dog out in the street.
He was skittish but I lured him into our backyard with a bowl of water.
We couldn’t get close enough to read the phone number on his tags.
Not even with the binoculars.
Or the telephoto camera lens.

We took turns trying to read those numbers.
My old(er) eyes couldn’t do it.
Zebu’s young(er) eyes couldn’t do it, either.
Zippy’s efforts were thwarted by all the fur.
So he got down on the ground with binoculars and biscuits.
And coaxed the big boy closer.

It took quite some time.
But Zippy prevailed.
Turns out his name is Buster.
And he was brought to the shelter as a fence-jumper.
The good news is a new family adopted him.
Bad news is Buster’s been caught three times by Animal Control.
Today, though, he avoided an arrest.
And made some new friends.
YOU ARE HEROES!! Lucky Buster!

It felt good to help him home. But I do worry about that dog; he’s a big ol’ wandering galoot!

Maybe he will wander back to you! Our dog used to only go to the same house down the street every time he wandered away. : )

One of our dogs does that now! She’s terrified of thunder and jumps the fence and runs to a man’s house down the hill. He works on old cars so maybe my dog is a gear-head!

Aw Buster! Stay with that family who brought you back from the shelter. No more fence jumping!

That family is, I think, in the process of building a taller fence. They’ve got a section that’s only three feet high, and ol’ Buster can practically step over it.
