Two American Kestrels sitting on a wire above my yard.
How lucky am I?

The male is on the left and the female on the right.
Care to read their body language and write a little script?
You are lucky indeed! Judging by this photo there’s trouble in paradise but I don’t think she knows it yet 🙂

It does appear as if there’s trouble brewing. And sometimes we’re the last to know!

She: I told you those twigs wouldn’t work.
He: I did my best.
She: No, you got distracted by the robins fighting back there.
He:…Fine.

Ah, those squabbling robins. Always causing problems for the rest of us. 🙂 Thanks for playing along!

Their plumage is so striking. A couple years ago we had some nesting on the telephone pole but I think the flickers have claimed it this year so we probably see them so often.

It is, you don’t see birds like that around here for sure.

The Sibley guide map shows them being all around the country so keep your eyes peeled, you might see one!

OH, said the first one, HOW LUCKY WE ARE TO SIT ON THIS WIRE ABOVE TRACY’S YARD!
YES! said the second one, LET’S SING ABOUT IT!
So the kestrels sang the day away.
And the song was good.

I love them, too. We also saw one out in the open space when we were running over the weekend. I hope you see one sometime soon, Debbi. They’re beauties.

He is showing her his colorful feathers and she is most definitely interested.

How could any female ignore those feathers? He’s one good-looking falcon.

I really do feel so fortunate to have them come here. They’re so beautiful. I wonder what Cassie would do if they landed on her fence.

Cassie’s really good with the birds. Once the doves take flight, she wanders over to sniff where they’ve been. The rats and the opossums really get her dander up though.

Rats and opossums like to rustle around in the grass and leaves, and that Cassie’s turf. 🙂

What an incredible photo. (I’ve been enjoying all of them.)

I’m glad you like it, Sarah. I just recently figured out that I can take pictures of birds on the wires as long as I mess with the exposure. All this time I thought I couldn’t get any good shots because of the lighting issue.
