I recently bemoaned the lack of blooming iris in my gardens, wondering how others in the neighborhood managed their bumper crops of iris. I then realized I wasn’t alone. Yes, there were a couple gardens absolutely filled with iris, but the majority of us had clumps of iris in which only one or two stalks had buds/blooms. Then I remembered our early freeze last fall and the unusual amounts of moisture this spring. Maybe it wasn’t negligent gardening practices that led to my dearth of iris blooms? Whatever the reason, I’m grateful for this flower.
Solidarity with late bloomers, yo!
Very pretty.

You’re welcome. Gave me the chance to check it out again.

They also need to be dug up and separated every so often, or maybe you’ve done that?

Ah, yes. I definitely need to separate them but have been coasting year after year. I do think the freeze had something to do with it because so many in the neighborhood had similar iris clumps. They can’t ALL be as lazy as me. 🙂

I understand, Tracy; it seems kind of daunting. I once owned a home with yellow iris that I never separated the entire time I lived there. Part of the problem was that I wasn’t totally sure how to do it! You’re probably right that the weather also played a major part in what you’re noticing.

I’ve done it a number of times over the year, but have gradually lost my will. It most definitely feels daunting. (P.S. I love yellow iris!)

And I always wished that mine were purple because that’s what my parents had when I was a kid:)
