Day 155 of the genocidal war on Palestinians

Today is Day 155 of the brutal assault on Gaza. Over 30,000 have been killed, 70% of them women and children.  Sunset tomorrow marks the beginning of Ramadan, the Muslim holy month. Currently, 1.5 million Palestinians are crowded into Rafah, the southernmost city in Gaza, the region they fled to because the Israelis kept telling them to move south to “safe zones.” Every so-called safe zone has been bombed and destroyed and now those traumatized, starving, desperate people are facing the imminent Israeli ground invasion of Rafah, an invasion fully sponsored by the United States. (Genocide Joe is an ardent Zionist and in 1982 revealed to then-Prime Minister, Menachem Begin, Biden’s willingness to slaughter Palestinian women and children, a statement so callous it stunned the militant Zionist PM.)

The situation is horrifying on every single level. PLEASE continue to contact your reps (to make them uncomfortable, if nothing else), demanding an immediate and permanent ceasefire + an end to aid to Israel. Food and supplies must be allowed in!  The performative airdrops are literally killing Palestinians, as they are either targeted by Israel while trying to retrieve the food or are crushed by a pallet.

    • Yes, to the weight of grief. BUT, our government absolutely can end this with one phone call from Biden. Reagan, that nasty reactionary president who did so much harm, did that very thing way back when: https://responsiblestatecraft.org/2021/05/24/ronald-reagan-wasnt-afraid-to-use-leverage-to-hold-israel-to-task/

Biden’s feigned helplessness as he continues to send bombs and money, cut funding to UNRWA, veto all UN resolutions for a ceasefire, etc., show his true colors. He’s completely fine with wiping out the Palestinians as he feeds the war machine. I feel grief, yes, but also a burning anger and disgust.

      • I’m currently reading “War Made Invisible: How America Hides the Human Toll of Its Military Machine” by Norman Solomon (USA 2023). What we’re witnessing in Gaza is nothing new, just war made visible. Godson Israel is really no different from his Godfather.

        • Oof, that’s got to be a heavy read. I’ve long admired Norman Solomon but haven’t read that book. Thank you for putting it on my radar. And YES to your assessment re Gaza being war made visible. As always, you get to the heart of the matter.

          • It is a heavy read, but an important one. What is done in darkness has a way, eventually, of being revealed for all who are willing to see. I’m struggling with my complicity in all the pain our wars inflict on our global family.

            • Thank you for being intentional in your learning, even when the material is so hard. I admit to pacing myself on such reads. And yes to our being complicit in the pain inflicted. We can’t change our pasts but we can strive to move forward in solidarity with the most vulnerable.
