Fidelity

In a stunning display of misplaced priorities and energy, Ken Starr (yes, that Ken Starr) has filed a California legal brief to forcibly divorce the 18,000 same-sex couples married before the passage of Prop 8.  Because, you know, we’ve got too much love and commitment going on in this world.

I’m so damned sick of this but one thing I can do is this.

You might not think this stuff has anything to do with you but it does.  When one segment of society is singled out and told their love is meaningless and unworthy, we all become lesser people.

I cried watching this video filled with people asking to be allowed to live and love as their hearts dictate……

  1. Oh! That does break my heart.
It makes me think of this “Thought” by Walt Whitman:
    Thought
Of Equality–as if it harm’d me, giving others the same chances and rights as myself–as if it were not indespensable to my own rights that others possess the same.

  3. I just blogged about this too; I must’ve watched this video a zillion times today. I hope it makes the issue hit home for people who may not really have understood what they were standing against previously.

    • It’s a beautiful, heart-wrenching video. And I love Regina Spektor’s music so am happy to know she allowed her song to be used for this.
I just caught up on your blog and want to tell you I’m so sorry you’ve turned into a February Blah Zombie. I don’t like it much, either. But I am thrilled to have longer days. We’re almost there, Carolyn. You can do it!!

  4. warning: contents may be frothing
Oh, that made me and my partner choke up too (he happens to be male, so we get to stay married). Though it is a seperate legal issue of course, I suspect a lot of those who voted for Prop 8 believed it would nullify all existing same-sex marriages. I doubt there was much of a voting block that thought, “Okay, these people should get to stay married, but just no more!” Still, I hope this video helps some people rethink their priorities. Not the religious zealots who believe God fashioned Eve out of Adam’s rib so that those two could serve as sexual roles models for the rest of us. Not them, but regular people, people who, frankly, unthinkingly voted their squick about gay sex. Let them see what marriage, gay or straight, truly about: abiding love and committment to being a family. And that forcing these families to divorce just because some random people don’t like to think about other sexualities is a disgusting misuse of privelidge.

I just don’t get it. Really and truly I don’t. Gay love is no threat to my love. And I hope you’re right that there are some people who will watch this video and have an epiphany about what this means in these people’s lives.

  8. It really is an amazing song – the perfect soundtrack for these beautiful images.

I’m hanging in there, Tracy, thanks. Going to beat this zombie thing, damn it!
