Health Insight

Thank you again for all the good wishes regarding Zippy’s heart.  Yesterday he went to work and felt fine, even as he took a nearly two-mile walk on the mall.  He walked slowly and with a friend, and enjoyed being out in the fresh air.

Since many, many people are suffering in this poor economy and job market, I wanted to share something that might help someone:

We thought Zippy’s feelings of low-energy and breathlessness (and eventual tightening in chest) were a result of stress since the company he works for filed for bankruptcy in November and his job terminates at the end of March.

But Zippy now realizes there was a major difference between how stress affected his body and how the blocked artery affected him.

In the past, whenever he was under stress exercise always made him feel better.
When his artery was blocked, exercise did NOT make him feel better (physically or emotionally).

(My siblings found this info helpful since they’ve been walking around clutching their chests, wondering if they’re also on the verge of heart attacks.  My family has a history of heart disease, as does Zippy’s.  And yes, I realize Zippy and I had no business having kids since we’re both practically blind and have family trees filled with clogged arteries.  But that genetic ship has sailed).

  1. Thanks for thinking of everyone else at such a stressful time. You never know who you’ll help *gasp* or whose life you might have saved. Glad Zippy’s feeling a little better.

    • I knew I needed to share this when I saw my sister’s expression as Zippy explained the difference to her. There was a real shift in her understanding and how she viewed the issue.
Thanks for the good thoughts about Zippy.

          • Because of…THINGS…I’ve been going to class just once a week, but I plan to get back into a twice-weekly class routine again, starting this Thursday. I need regular instructions to help me remember to breathe and align myself well…all that, and more. I need to see/do yoga as a daily practice.

            • I’ve been doing mine at home because I cannot get myself to pack up and go elsewhere. I’m doing kundalini yoga to help with my flexibility, and it seems a good fit so far. Nothing too tricky but good practice on breathing and stretching.
I’m glad you’re getting back to your routine and aren’t letting THINGS take over. 🙂

  3. I’m glad Zippy is feeling better–and best of luck with the job situation. Sigh. It’s tough all over, isn’t it.
And thanks for the info on the heart. It’s good to know.
    Hugs coming your way, Tracy.

  5. Thanks for the insight! I never thought of it that way. I have a history of heart disease in my family as well. I’m going to remember what you just said.
We all have our genetic baggage we give to our kids. It’s part of life–says me who is skipping her homework tonight and hoping to do it really fast in the morning because she ran out of ADD meds and can’t concentrate for thirty seconds. My husband has ADD too and so do two of our kids. Sorry, kids!

You’re right about the genetic baggage. It’s just hitting me kind of hard right now but there’s always something, isn’t there?
      (Thanks for the ADD/anonymous laugh).
